Here are the favourites to take the coveted Sixth Man award for the ’22/’23 NBA season.
At The Jump Hub, we have assessed their chances as we see them and will update this article regularly to see if we were right...

General update - 29th Mar 2023
The March of Immanuel Quickley continues apace into March and he finds himself top of the list in terms of his NBA Sixth Man betting odds @ 1.50
The bookmakers have it as a 2-way race between him and Malcolm Brogdon @ 2.50 so let's look a little closer at their recent form and see what we can learn:
Quickley
In his 3rd season with the New York Knickerbockers, Immanuel Quickley has been getting more minutes than ever before and duly repaying some of that confidence in him. In his last game, he had an absolute barnstormer. In just 30 minutes he:
Attempted 18 field goals, scoring 14 of them.
That's a 77.8% conversion rate and would put him in the top 10 for the whole NBA if it could be maintained. Still, it is easily his best of the season (if we discount a game where he only made 5 attempts but scored them all) and no doubt caught the attention of bookmakers and fans alike. Especially when he also managed:
5 of 7 from 3-point distance (71.4%)
7 of 9 from the free throw line (77.8%)
A total of 40 points
9 assists
With some recent scores of 38, 26 (x2), and 25, Quickley’s points average for March is up to 19.8. And it’s not just a case of him getting heavier minutes, because he got more in January but only averaged 15.4, even with the extra time. Only time will tell if Immanuel Quickley is about to go on an award-winning late-season run and snatch The NBA’s Sixth Man award but he certainly isn’t hurting his chances with performances like this.
Brogdon
When we turn our attention to Malcolm Brogdon’s recent form, he has been a lot less impressive. His points average is down for March and he is prone to the occasional single-figure game with 3 in March already. He’s hitting fewer of his 3-point efforts this month and has dropped from hitting 53.3% of them in February to 36.1% in March
Let's take a look at their season's stats and compare and contrast:
Quickley vs Brogdon
Stats | Immanuel Quickley | Malcolm Brogdon |
---|---|---|
Games (G) | 75 | 62 |
Games started (GS) | 17 | 0 |
Minutes (M) | 28.5 | 25.8 |
Points (PTS) | 14.1 | 14.6 |
Field goals attempted (FGA) | 11.0 | 10.6 |
Field goal % (FG%) | 44.6 | 48.3 |
3-point % (3P%) | 36.0 | 45.0 |
Free throw % (FT%) | 82.7 | 87.6 |
Total rebounds (TRB) | 4.1 | 4.2 |
Assists (AST) | 3.3 | 3.7 |
Blocks (BLK) | 0.2 | 0.3 |
Steals (STL) | 0.9 | 0.6 |
Player fouls (PF) | 2.0 | 1.6 |
Turnovers (TOV) | 1.1 | 1.5 |
When comparing them side-by-side like that, we get a nice overview of their performances this season. We can see that Brogdon has yet to start in a single game for the Boston Celtics but is preferred as a late-game introduction. And rather an effective one at that. He averages 14.6 points every time he takes to the court, pulls down a few rebounds, and gives some assists. It's a nice even spread of solid numbers given the low minutes and we can see why he is assigned the role of shoring things up in the later stages of games. It's always going to be a welcome sight to see the introduction of a player that averages:
0.57 points per minute
Ostensibly, Quickley is quite similar but has 17 starts under his belt. When he appears, Immanuel averages:
0.49 points per minute
Quickley's longer-distance shooting is what sees him lag behind Brodgon a touch. But that recent form has to be playing a huge role in his betting odds right now. He is like a different player from the one who took to the court a few short weeks ago. Sadly for Brogdon, the same is also true for him but in the less-flattering direction…

Once again we have embarrassed ourselves here in The Jump Hub office. Of the 6 players that are left in the running for the 2022/'23 NBA Sixth Man Award, we totally missed 2 of them. No separate section describing their achievements or betting odds. Our apologies to:

General update - 28th Feb 2023

Norman Powell rockets up the list, jumping from NBA Sixth Man betting odds @ 61.00 to @ 15.00 in the space of a few days. The reason is not immediately apparent. He has solid numbers but nothing that would lead us to expect such a meteoric rise.
The rest of the positions at the top of the list remain the same. Some slight fluctuations in betting odds but nothing more.

Westbrook is currently 7th in the NBA for assists
He remains a solid scorer and contributes solidly in terms of rebounds and assists.
Update: 30th Nov 2022
After an impressive 24 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds in a 116 - 115 loss to the Indiana Pacers, Westbrook is improving. Or maybe it is another wave in his series of erratic performances this season so far. Despite being an offensive threat, he gave the ball away an unforgivable 6 times in just 27 minutes of both his last games.
He is joint top of the NBA for turnovers per game.
2022/’23 averages per NBA game:
G: 18 \ GS: 3 \ MP: 28.2 \ PTS: 14.8 \ FG%: 40.6 \ 3P%: 31.6 \ FT%: 72.6 \ TRB: 5.2 \ AST: 7.3 \ STL: 1.1 \ BLK: 0.4 \ TOV: 3.8 \ PF: 2.4
5.2 rebounds in 28.2 minutes = 0.29 rebounds per minute.
That puts him roughly level with Christian Wood, who we have been very impressed with.
Among the 4 favourites, none even gets close to Westbrook in assists. He is a machine, providing playmaking services to his teammates at the rate of:
0.26 assists per minute
The nearest anyone here gets to that is Jordan Poole with 0.16 per minute.
Westbrook's NBA Sixth Man betting odds remain @ 2.50
Original text
It must be a truly strange sensation for Russell Westbrook to find himself as favourite to be the NBA's Sixth Man. In an illustrious career spanning 14 years thus far, he started EVERY SINGLE GAME he played in from early in his first season (2008/'09) until the start of the current one.
In fact, Westbrook started his first game for Oklahoma on November 29th, 2008 against Memphis. He has started every game that he played in since then. That's a total of:
1,039 games played. 1,007 starts = 96.9% of all career games started
2008 - 2022: 1,004 consecutive game starts
To think that a guy who has such incredible consistency in starting games might be the favourite for Sixth Man is bizarre indeed.
Or is it? Politics and trade nonsense aside, Westbrook is still among the best players ever to set foot on a basketball court and surely has a lot left to offer.
He might not be the player that the Lakers want moving forwards but he maintains that his attitude is in the right place:
"I need to just do my job. Whether I'm wanted or not doesn't really matter. I think the most important thing is that I show up for work and I do the job like I've always done it: Be professional and go out and play my ass off and compete."
What do the numbers say? Let's take a look.
2022/’23 averages per NBA game:
G: 17 \ GS: 3 \ MP: 28.3 \ PTS: 14.8 \ FG%: 39.4 \ 3P%: 30.6 \ FT%: 72.9 \ TRB: 5.2 \ AST: 7.4 \ STL: 1.1 \ BLK: 0.4 \ TOV: 3.6 \ PF: 2.5
Westbrook might be coming off the bench but is still getting almost 30 minutes per game. It's not as though they're giving him short minutes.
Scoring-wise, things have been somewhat erratic.
21 points in 31 minutes against Phoenix
That 40% conversion rate is never going to win any prizes but is solid.
Compare that with his next game:
3 points in 19 minutes against the San Antonio Spurs
All over the place. With 0.52 points per minute, he's a little shy of where he was last season. But only by a tiny fraction.
Westbrook is snatching about as many rebounds per minute as he ever does. More than last season and significantly more than during his season with the Houston Rockets.
28 assists across his last 4 games.
All in all, very dependable and solid. Especially coming off the bench. From where we're sitting, Westbrook is a decent shout for the NBA's Sixth Man award this season and his Sixth Man betting odds reflect that. He sits @ 2.50 (28th Nov '22)

Update: 19th Dec 2022
In his last 3 games, Jordan Poole has scored a total of 92 points
Giving a total of 15 assists in those same games
He's missed only 4 of 49 free throws in December
Poole could not be more solidly in contention for the NBA Sixth Man award. His biggest problem might be that he has now started 11 of 30 games. If that number rises above 50% then he will no longer be in contention.
Update: 13th Dec 2022
Jordan Poole has improved in every single category except steals (STL) since our last update. He is consolidating his position as an excellent player to bring off the bench. He is currently still eligible for the Sixth Man award but has doubled his starts in 2 weeks

Update: 30th Nov 2022
After 21 games and 4 starts, Jordan Poole leads the favourites for his free throwing. 83.8% is very respectable. It will not win him any awards in and of itself, but everything counts towards the bigger picture.
If he can drive up those defensive stats and keep pushing for more assists, then he will stay in good shape. His NBA Sixth Man betting odds remain @ 5.50

Of the 76 games Jordan Poole played in last season, he started 51 of them and averaged 30 mins per game

Having only started 4 of the 21 NBA games he has played for the Golden State Warriors so far this season, Jordan Poole looks likely to be eligible to win the NBA's Sixth Man award if he performs adequately.
In his first 4 NBA seasons, Poole has scored:
0.39, 0.62, 0.62, and 0.59 points per minute respectively
Over 16 in just 27.5 minutes of each game is extremely useful to any team.
Poole's consistency in grabbing those points has been all over the place. He scored 36 points against the San Antonio Spurs with a 65% conversion rate. He was on fire that day with 50% of all 3-pointers made and 83.3% from the free throw line.
Then he gets just 8 points in 7 fewer minutes against the Los Angeles Clippers with a 20% success rate. 66.7% from the free throw line that game.
Having said that, Jordan Poole's last 2 outings have been very productive.
A total of 43 points, 8 rebounds, and 12 assists.
Are they the kind of numbers that stand out enough for him to be voted as the NBA's Sixth Man? It's too early to say for sure. If they stay the same then probably not quite. We've got a feeling that there are going to be some big performances from some people on this list coming soon.
We can't wait.

Powell was never fully under the radar but didn't ping our spidey senses early on in the season. Although he has yet to fully live up to his last season in terms of his overall numbers, he keeps plugging away and working hard.
And almost 15 points in less than 25 minutes per game are not to be sniffed at. If he can raise his game in at least one more area then he has a solid chance in the NBA Sixth Man competition. But without heavy rebounds or assists to back up his scoring, he is unlikely to be the trophy-winner as far as we're concerned. Watch this space.

Update: 13th Dec 2022
Christian Wood has maintained his course so far this season. It's hard to get too excited about a player who makes just over one assist per game and does nothing in terms of stealing it back when he loses the ball 2.4 times.
But those rebounds are impressive. He's 34th in the whole NBA for rebounds on just 26 minutes per game. That is not as easy as it sounds. If it does sound easy.
Which it probably doesn't...

2022/’23 averages per NBA game:
When you look at how much moving around Christian Wood has done in just 7 years of NBA action, you might be forgiven for thinking that he is no more than a stop-gap type of player. Bring him on in rotation to nudge the game in your direction with any freshness in the legs.
And that wouldn't be entirely inaccurate. The video below only runs as far as Wood's resurgence with the Detroit Pistons but shows his general direction of travel and why we find him the joint 3rd favourite to take the NBA Sixth Man award this season.
2022/’23 averages per NBA game:
G: 17 \ GS: 0 \ MP: 25.5 \ PTS: 17.1 \ FG%: 56.6 \ 3P%: 43.9 \ FT%: 68.9 \ TRB: 7.6 \ AST: 1.1 \ STL: 0.5 \ BLK: 0.5 \ TOV: 2.4 \ PF: 2.8
Wood started all but one game last season but has started none so far this season. Starting zero games so far puts him squarely in contention for this award, but what do the markets see in him otherwise?
Well, for a start he has:
57 points and 25 rebounds in his last 3 outings
17.1 points per game in just 25.5 minutes = 0.67 points per minute
That makes him the most prolific scorer so far on this list so far.
Converting them at a rate of 56.6% overall and 43.9% from 3 point range
These numbers are better than solid if not ground-breaking. Both stats put him above the 2 favourites here.
But we're not done yet...
7.6 rebounds in 25.5 minutes = 0.30 per minute
Westbrook is snagging 0.18
The plot thickens...

We have to remember that this is Mathurin's rookie season before we go on. While his stats are very decent, the fact is that they have all dropped since our last update. He will assuredly go on to have a long, fruitful career in the NBA if he carries on like this. But he will probably not win the NBA Sixth Man award unless he really drags out a few performances and brings his numbers back online.
His last game against Miami was particularly poor. He even slipped on points, netting just 9.
4 of those from the foul line.
In 28 minutes he had:
9 points
1 rebound
0 assists.
0 blocks
0 steals

Having said that, he took 8 rebounds and 23 points in the Pacers' 1-point victory against the Los Angeles Lakers in his last game.

Original text
Malcolm Brogdon missed a good deal of the 2021/'22 NBA season due to injury but seems to have bounced back nicely this season. He's not starting games, so is eligible for the Sixth Man award. In fact, he's barely playing half-games at this point. Which makes his numbers even more impressive:
2022/’23 averages per NBA game:
G: 17 \ GS: 0 \ MP: 22.7 \ PTS: 14.0 \ FG%: 48.8 \ 3P%: 46.9 \ FT%: 85.7 \ TRB: 3.9 \ AST: 3.8 \ STL: 0.5 \ BLK: 0.2 \ TOV: 1.9 \ PF: 1.4
46.9% of 3-pointers made is the best percentage on this list and his overall field goal conversion rate is excellent.
0.62 points per minute also puts him up with the leaders here.
Rock-solid free throwing doesn't hurt his cause either. Brogdon's NBA Sixth Man betting odds dropped all the way down to @ 4.70 at one point but have lengthened again to @ 13.00
